About the Author

Jamie Knight, LL.B., practises labour and employment law as a partner with Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP in the firm’s Hamilton and Toronto offices. Jamie has thirty-five years of experience working with his clients to improve the effectiveness of their human resources relationships. Jamie represents employers in all aspects of dealing with their unionized and non-unionized employees. Jamie’s practice features wrongful dismissal, human rights, health and safety, privacy, labour board hearings, collective bargaining and labour arbitrations. Jamie is an author/co-author of some twenty publications — almost all in multiple editions. He is a teacher, frequent speaker, and pro-active advocate for workplaces that work.

Jamie has been on the Board of the Canadian Association of Counsel to Employers (CACE) since 2008, President in 2017 and Past President in 2018. In 2017, Jamie was named the Canadian HR Reporter 2017 Employment Lawyer of the Year, as selected by Canadian Lawyer Magazine. In addition to a Band 1 ranking in Chambers Global and Chambers Canada, Jamie has maintained a high ranking for many years in other respected sources in both categories of employment and labour law. In 2018, Jamie was elected as a Fellow of the U.S.-based College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.

Brett Christen is a partner in the Toronto office of Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP. He practices in all areas of labour and employment law on behalf of management. Certified as a Specialist in Labour Law by the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1998. Rated as a leading practitioner in Labour Relations by The Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory, recognized by The Best Lawyers in Canada in labour and employment, and by Martindale-Hubbell's list of distinguished peer rated lawyers in labour law. Represents a variety of private and public sector employers including federal and provincial Crown corporations. Geoff Ryans, LL.B., is a partner in the Toronto office of Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP, practising in all areas of labour and employment law. Geoff regularly acts for a wide variety of union and non-union clients. Geoff has been involved in many significant arbitrations, wrongful dismissals and proceedings before the Ontario Labour Relations Board and the Human Rights Tribunal. Geoff has also assisted numerous clients in collective bargaining, both as spokesperson at the bargaining table and providing advice on the drafting of language for inclusion in a collective agreement. Geoff regularly writes and speaks on a wide variety of labour and employment topics, including with respect to collective bargaining strategies, injunctive relief and restrictive covenants in employment contracts. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Geoff received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Ottawa in 2003, and a Bachelor of Laws from Queen's University in 2006. Geoff is a member of The Advocates' Society, the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association and the Ontario Bar Association.

Daina Search, J.D., is an associate in the Toronto office of Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP, practising in all areas of labour and employment law. Daina received her Juris Doctor from the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario in 2012. While at Western, Daina was the recipient of the Edna Yuet-Lui Chan Memorial Award. She also served as a teaching assistant for Professor Rande Kostal. Prior to attending law school, Daina graduated from McMaster University where she obtained her Honours Bachelor of Science degree, Dean's Honour List. Daina served as a Contributing Editor of the Canadian Labour Relations Board Reports from 2013 to 2015. Daina has also been published in several labour and employment law periodicals. Daina is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association and the Ontario Bar Association.
